So here is a point and click adventure for the modern age which seems to showcase the sheer brutality and tragedy of war. First off, I have to praise how charming the art and animations are in this game; It is one of the main reasons you will keep playing.

The story revolves around the time-frame of world war 1 (around 1914). You play as a select few characters who go through different time periods of the war. Along the way you will unlock items and historic story events on the actual events which took place during this time and how soldiers coped with this time in history.

The mechanics are rather simple as you scroll from left to right with your controller or finger if played on IOS. you pick up items – some of which can be used as projectiles in order to pass obstacles or obtain other items. There are no real characters interactions you are greeted with simple gestures from other NPCs until you come across cut scenes. The only real gripe I have with this game is the lack of mechanics as most puzzles will consist of you raising a hoook or rope by turning a wheel, pulling a level or pushing and item. The issue here is that this game consists of 4 episodes – so repetition does come into play quite a bit.

So what really keeps you on your toes? The beautiful art, of course and the strive to complete the story and watch how the characters unfold. Ubisoft attempts to break this tedium by throwing in a few actions sequences here and there, which may be a plus for some or a downside for others. Expect to find a few car scenes where you are swiping left and right to avoid obstacles and a few boss occurrences which will require a bit a strategy to defeat.

The sound is very well done in this title with orchestration that sounds like it came straight out of a popular war flick. There is not much in terms of voice acting save for the narration bits, but the animations and grunts from soldiers seem to do quite a good job or explaining the scenes in question.

If you are craving a new adventure to hop into and even have a slight interest in history and war then Ubisoft’s Valiant Hearts can surely fill that void.
