Micky Mouse and the Castle of Illusion

Once in awhile a classic platformer is remastered for modern players and turns out to be just as entertaining as its first release.

This was a title was originally made for the Sega Genesis in 1990. Sega decided to remake this title for modern players on Xbox live arcade and PSN. The concept of the game is essentially a sidescrolling platformer. This title was remade under the helm of the original director in 2.5D with all new 3d graphics and a reimagined soundtrack as well.

Micky is out to save his girlfriend Minnie from the sinister Mizrabel – cliche as it is. Micky needs to collect gems in order to cross the rainbow bridge to save Minnie. The story is as simple and straight forward as a Mario title and that is fine by me as the game itself is a lot of fun.

The levels are all based within a Castle which has doors that need to be unlocked in order to proceed into a Level. The levels in the castles consist of 3 Acts (This may seem familiar to people who have played Mario 64). The 3rd act consists of a standard boss fight. The levels contain quite a bit of variety in order to keep the player entertained. The added voice narration throughout levels is a more than welcome touch as well.

One level could consist of standing throwing projectiles at enemies and jumping across trees to running down a hill from a giant apple. There is always something to keep you on your toes and keep the pace from slowing down.

Boss fights can be quite simple once you figure out enemy patterns. The only difficult boss I found was the final boss which could take quite a few times to truly master.

Overall the adventure is sadly quite short as the original game. It can be beaten in only a few hours and you will be left hungry for more. That is not to say this title isn’t worth purchasing as there is replay value in finding hidden items such as chilli peppers throughout levels in order to unlock new outfits.

All in all well done Sega for this remake.
